Junior Union Cup Final:
Referee: Ross Grieve Assistants: Jason Summers and Sion Edwards Venue: Bierspool, Pembroke Dock Harlequins Crymych showed the overall strength of the club as they retained the junior union trophy by beating old rivals Whitland after scoring 27 unanswered points in the second half, completing a deserved double of league and cup in the process. But a less-experienced Borderers’ outfit pushed them hard in a tight first half where they led 6-5 thanks to two penalties from full back Geraint Jones to an unconverted Crymych corner try by Mark Beasley from a powerful forward drive. Jones also had a third penalty chance which he put wide whilst Scott Newton was also off-target with a long range effort as both teams had try-scoring chances but lost possession at key times in the awful weather conditions that resembled November rather than late May!
But the Preseli Men raised the tempo after the oranges and their ability to take advantage of opposition errors paid dividends as flanker Dylan Phillips scored a try converted by Emyr Lewis to put them ahead for the first time. Strong-running centre Tomi Jones added a third try which Lewis converted before he also slotted a penalty to make the game safe and in the closing stages Crymych used their bench players to good effect as replacements Llyw Rees and Michael Llewellyn crossed the whitewash for unconverted tries. Junior Union chairman Richard Merriman rightly congratulated both teams and match officials for producing a good game in the dire conditions and showed real panache in presenting Crymych with the league trophy because someone at the successful club had forgotten to bring back the Junior Union Cup from their clubhouse!
